2026 Fantasy Football Lab is Open for Business
Total Fantasy Football points and even Points per Game can be deceiving. In Fantasy Football, we want to know not only who the hot players are early in the season, but also who has been productive over a longer period. My rankings utilize four separate indexes that are explained below to give a rating for each player. Let’s look at who the leaders of the pack are in Fantasy Football after week seven.
MVP Index Explained
Every week in Fantasy Football, a player’s statistics can have three possible outcomes. They can help your team win by having a huge points week. They can cause your team to lose with a very low-scoring week. They can keep your team in contention by performing above the historic median of expected output. The MVP Index aimed to combine these three outcomes into one easy-to-understand number. While the historic median for Fantasy Football points differs by position, using the same expected performance level for RB, WR, and TE gives us a score to compare while making Flex starting decisions all season.
MVP26 Explained
This index uses the same formula as the MVP Index above but uses only this season's data. All games played are used to give a true value to each player as if they started them for every game this year in Fantasy Football.
Upside Index Explained
While consistency matters in Fantasy Football, weekly upside consistency matters even more. The UPSIDE INDEX calculates a player’s best 1/3rd of his games over the past 2 seasons plus the current season. This extended database gives us a better sense of a player’s long-term form, not just a few data points from the current season. Each week, the data weights the current season more heavily.
GOOD Index Explained
Often in the NFL, a young player struggles early in their career. While the MVP Index does a solid job of keeping up with players' latest developments, the GOOD Index counts only their best games over the past 2 seasons plus the current season. This index values rookie and second-year players lower because they have fewer total games to post a high GOOD Index, but it rewards players who stay healthy and productive over a longer time frame.
Scoring System Used
The system uses regular 1-point-per-reception scoring, with no TE premium. Players get 1 point for every 10 rushing or receiving yards and 1 point for every 25 passing yards. TDs count 6 points for rushing and 4 points for passing TDs.

Conclusion
Seven weeks are in the books, and we are starting to see what this season has in store for scoring at each position. The number of elite players (MVP26>100) is over the six-year median at each position, but the secondary starters (MVP26>60) are well below median at RB and WR after seven weeks of play. That will lead to some tougher-than-normal decisions during Bye weeks as the injuries continue to mount. Trey McBride is having another fantastic season. If you ranked him against all WRs this season, he'd be WR4 while still being TE-eligible in your lineups. If this trend continues, he could be the season's most valuable fantasy football asset.
Good luck with your lineup decisions this week.
